Detroit Public Schools to present free Evening of Fine Arts celebration

The best and brightest students of the Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) will take center stage at the Fox Theatre on Wednesday during the district's 55th annual Evening of Fine Arts. The free, 6 p.m. concert will feature performances by the district’s top instrumental music ensembles, vocal music ensembles, dance companies, and theater excerpts. In addition, the district’s top visual artists will display their work in the Fox Theatre’s Grand Lobby. “It is impossible not to have goosebumps while watching our students perform at this event,” said Dr. Nikolai Vitti, district superintendent. “We are grateful for the support we have received as a district to bring back this event to the Fox Theatre. It means so much to our students and their teachers and families. If you did not attend the event last year, you need to attend this year. The performances match any professional concert.”

Detroit’s new poet laureate, Jessica Care Moore, vows to celebrate, promote

Mayor Mike Duggan on Tuesday announced the city's new poet laureate, who will be responsible for composing poems for special events and occasions in Detroit. Jessica Care Moore, founder and producer of Black WOMEN Rock! and founder of The Moore Art House, a nonprofit dedicated to improving literacy in Detroit, will take on the role. Moore's identifiable voice was behind the "Move the World" campaign, a video used to make a pitch for an Amazon headquarters in Detroit.

Jessica Care Moore named poet laureate: ‘An authentic voice of Detroit

The City of Detroit has named its newest poet laureate: Jessica Care Moore – a Detroiter through a through.
